Heya!
Welcome to week number two at ye olde newsletter. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, but alas I am trying to establish a weekly Sunday schedule so I’m using magic to send this to the future. I hope you had some good time off and that I’m chilling out in Inverness, California as planned, after helping Theresa sell ceramics in the bay area.
Books
It’s been a dozen years or so since I last read this puppy. Metafiction before that term was coined. The novel takes place inside the commentary of a 999 line poem. I’ll just leave it at that. It’s hilarious.
Since I work at a library and live in a pretty cozy house I rarely buy books anymore, but I needed to own this one. Lucky for me, my buddy Nate just opened a bookshop here in Portland called Lost Avenue Books.
Nate’s got great taste so although it’s not a giant collection, I don’t have to sift through shit I’m not interested in. If I haven’t heard of a book I can still trust it’ll be worth checking out.
Wait, why are there records behind Nate? I thought it was a bookstore. But alas!
My buddy Bob shares space with Nate where he sells records and tapes (and my zines.) His shop is called Super-Electric Records. Bob is a great writer, DJ, and all around dude, and you can bet your ass his collection is curated like a pro!
My personal history with cassettes Part Two:
Not in the the mood to make a a year by year list for part two but highlights include:
Getting into Dead tapes and my buddy Jay making cover art
In high school getting turned onto new bands with full album dubs.
Meat Puppets II and Up on The Sun being very critical example.
The Smiths backed by The Exploited being the strangest combo.High school teasing my friend Amy G for making me a mixed tape. I was into albums man. Mixed tapes are for teeny boppers.
Fall in love with mixed tapes. Tape all of my friend’s CDs onto cassette for post-college road trip, box of favorite tapes and beloved mixes stolen in SF
Post college make lots of mixes off of housemates’ vinyl collection
Long lost high school girlfriend from summer in Hawaii finds me. We have plans of her moving to Portland. I make a crucial mixtape and mail it to her. She is indifferent, plans disintegrate.
To be continued….

Live
Remember Nate and Bob a couple of paragraphs up there? Well this week’s live entry came from a show at their digs. Two great songwriters/singers/guitarist that were brand new to me.
Thanks for reading, see ya next Sunday! - L
